Permanent Eye Liner

How Permanent Eyeliner Can Help You

Permanent eyeliner helps women and men enhance the appearance of their eyes. Eyeliner tattooing eliminates the need to outline eyelids with liquid liners or pencils. It improves the appearance of missing, thin, or light colored lashes. Permanent eyeliner allows people to swim, shower, or exercise without having eyeliner smudges. It provides safety and convenience to people with vision problems or unsteady hands. Eye doctors (Ophthalmologists and Optometrists) also recommend permanent eyeliner to patients who wear contact lenses, have watery eyes, or are allergic to regular makeup.

Eyeliner Shape and Design

Eyeliner “frames” an eye and can make eyelashes appear darker, fuller, or thicker. It can enhance the shape or balance (symmetry) of a person’s eyes, create the illusion of larger eyes, or affect how the spacing of the eyes is perceived. Eyeliner can also enhance or intensify eye color and make eyes appear more alluring. Dr. Reed has over 30 years experience in conventional makeup artistry and extensive training in advanced permanent eyeliner techniques. Her goal is to create a custom designed eyeliner that pleases you.

Safety During Your Eyeliner Procedure

Permanent eyeliner is one of Dr. Reed’s most requested procedures. As a licensed Doctor of Optometry for over 23 years, she has extensive education and experience regarding the human eye. She is skilled at manipulating eyelids and protecting eyes during eyeliner procedures. Many eye doctors refer their patients to her because she has successfully tattooed eyeliner on patients with chronic eye conditions. She has also worked on patients before and after their eye surgeries. Case examples include: Blepharitis, Blepharoplasty, Cataracts, Corneal Erosion, Corneal Grafts, Dry Eye Syndrome, Glaucoma, Intraocular Lens Implants, Keratitis, Keratoconus, LASIK, PRK, Punctual Plugs, Retinitis, and RK.

Eyeliner Tattoo Techniques

Eyelash Base Enhancement: This method is for people who want an extremely natural look. Dr. Reed places pigment between the lashes without drawing an actual line above or below them. That person’s eyelash base appears darker and fuller without the appearance of having eyeliner. Men often choose this procedure to add definition to their eyes without looking like they are wearing makeup.

Full Eyeliner (Top, Bottom, or Both): This method creates a line above the lashes (upper liner) or below them (lower liner) that adds depth to the eyes. Dr. Reed can create a line that is thin, medium, or thick. Color or a “smudged” effect can also be added. Every eyeliner procedure also includes an eyelash base enhancement at no additional cost.

Preparing for Your Procedure Appointment

You should allow at least 2 to 3 hours for your initial procedure. If you wear contact lenses, you must bring your eyeglasses since contacts cannot be worn the first 24-48 hours after a procedure. If you have had any eye surgery or treatment, the healing must be complete before your appointment. You should also wear and bring your favorite eyeliner pencil or liquid for evaluation and color matching. Additional preparation guidelines will be given to you when you schedule your procedure appointment. .

At Your Permanent Eyeliner Procedure

You will fill out forms including a medical history that Dr. Reed will review. She will evaluate your face and eyelid shape and your eyeliner color and design. She will then discuss techniques and colors with you. After optimal design and color are determined, topical anesthetics will be applied to numb your eyelids. She will continue to apply anesthetics during the procedure to keep you comfortable. Before and after photos will also be taken for your confidential file with your colors recorded for future reference.

After Your Permanent Eyeliner Procedure

Your eyelids will be slightly red and mildly swollen immediately after your procedure. They will appear a little puffy as if you had been crying which will go away within a few days. At first your eyeliner will look thicker and darker than you want, then it will lighten during the first week and continue until the color stabilizes. During the first week of healing, you cannot wear mascara or eye shadow. Your eyelids will be a little shiny (from applying ointments), so you should keep this in mind when scheduling your procedure. To minimize any chance of an infection or allergic reaction at home, Dr. Reed will give you detailed after care instructions with a complete kit containing the safest ophthalmic products at no additional cost.

Follow-up and Maintenance Appointments

Your eyeliner will gradually shrink and the color will lighten and stabilize over several weeks after your procedure. If it heals lighter or thinner than you desire, it can be darkened or thickened with a second application at a follow-up visit (“touch up”). A follow-up might be needed to adjust shape or color in areas that healed lighter from tissue swelling during the tattooing process. Ideally, your second visit should be completed between 4 to 8 weeks post procedure. Because permanent makeup can fade over time, you can schedule maintenance visits every few years to keep your color looking fresh. These visits are usually shorter and less expensive if the original work was done by Dr. Reed.
